Epilepsy is no respecter of age. It most commonly presents
in childhood and tends to be seen at its most severe during the
childhood years. It remains a uniquely frightening, stigmatising
and misunderstood disorder. For all these reasons, the impact of
epilepsy in a child on all the family members can be enormous.
Many studies have shown the considerable informational
needs of people with epilepsy and their carers. While the void
that previously existed has been filled by a number of books and
by informational material from the epilepsy associations, the
needs of parents of children with epilepsy have been somewhat
neglected. This book addresses their needs in a very straightforward,
user-friendly fashion, with a question and answer
format, and also contains insights from parents of children with
epilepsy that others will find useful.
I am delighted that this book has been developed and
published by colleagues from the Children’s Hospital in
Liverpool. It has been my pleasure to work very closely with
Richard Appleton over the last few years and there is no doubt
that his impact on the care offered to children with epilepsy
within our region has been considerable. His kindness,
understanding and skill is very much reflected in this book which
should be of enormous value to any parent reading it. |
