Vasari, his biographer, a painter in his own right and an astute observer of his contemporaries, made this observation: 'The gifts that Leonardo possessed seemed unlimited, extending to all areas of human knowledge and skill - artist, scientist, architect, musician, engineer, court entertainer, inventor and philosopher.'
Leonardo is generally considered to be the ultimate 'Renaissance man', a man capable of turning his mind to anything. We have his notebooks to prove it, and what we will do is to explore his words in order to come to a better understanding of the man, his achievement and his thinking. |
