| The book provides a systematic introduction into the fundamental ideas of thermodynamics at a somewhat advanced level. And it exhibits many applications of the theory in the fields of engineering, physics, chemistry, physical chemistry, and materials science. The universal equations of balance are strictly separated from the constitutive equations which characterize the behavior of material bodies, mostly gases, vapors, and liquids. Some selected solids like rubber, gels and shape memory alloys are considered as well.
Both authors have taught students of the subject for many years at the Technical University of Berlin, and they have actively participated in modern research in thermodynamics.
Historical annotations offer some relaxing moments for the reader. |

R in Action
When I began writing this book, I spent quite a bit of time searching for a good
quote to start things off. I ended up with two. R is a wonderfully flexible platform
and language for exploring, visualizing, and understanding data. I chose the quote
from Alice in Wonderland to capture the flavor of statistical analysis today—an... | | Forensic Engineering InvestigationForensic engineering is the application of engineering principles, knowledge, skills, and methodologies to answer questions of fact that may have legal ramifications. Forensic engineers typically are called upon to analyze car accidents, building collapses, fires, explosions, industrial accidents, and various calamities... | | Enterprise Mac Security: Mac OS X Snow Leopard (Foundations)
A common misconception in the Mac community is that Mac’s operating system is more secure than others. While this might be true in certain cases, security on the Mac is still a crucial issue. When sharing is enabled or remote control applications are installed, Mac OS X faces a variety of security threats.
