Imagine you have been given the time and leisure to spend a day wandering
around a busy Further Education (FE) college in the Lifelong Learning sector.
You decide to use this opportunity to see what issues are facing people in
leadership roles at various levels within the organisation. So, as well as finding
the time to complete an increasing load of paperwork, what else are these
leaders doing? Over there is a Head of Section trying to prepare feedback and
organise support for a member of his team who is struggling with classroom
management. Down the corridor is a Head of School about to chair a meeting
about retention and achievement figures and wondering how to encourage her
team to improve their performance without appearing to ‘blame’ them. On
another part of the campus a Head of Faculty is planning for the merger of
two schools under his leadership as part of a response to the Train to Gain
initiative and to competition within the local training market. In a crowded
staff workroom a Subject Leader ploughs through a new set of national
standards and tries to work out the best way to update and reassure her team.
And at the top of the building, in his tastefully decorated office, the Principal
contemplates his approaching retirement and questions the success of his
current strategy for building leadership capacity within the college.
This book is written for all those leaders and more. It addresses leadership
issues that arise for those at the very top of senior leadership teams as well as
for the lecturer who leads a subject team of two or three colleagues. Most of
the examples and case studies focus on middle and first-line leaders, not least
because there are so many of us out there! It has been estimated that
currently, in FE colleges alone, up to one in seven staff have a leadership and
management role (Times Educational Supplement, 7 July 2006). If we also
count first-line leadership roles such as subject leader – and indeed so we
should – the proportion is probably even higher. This means that leadership
skills are now more important to the sector than ever before, and this is clearly
reflected in recent government policy and legislation. |
