Youre upgrading to the 2007 Microsoft Office systemcongratulations! Now learn the tips and tricks to make Microsoft Office work for you. With this fun, easy-to-read guide, you get step by step instructions for tackling common productivity problems.

Have you ever seen a Smart Tag? If you use Microsoft Office XP or later, the answer is probably yes. If you're unsure, let us ask the question another way. Have you ever had your work interrupted by a pop-up button and you had no idea what it was for or how to make it go away? That was a Smart Tag.

Most Microsoft Office users have a love/hate relationship with Smart Tags; how you feel about Smart Tags depends largely on whether or not you know what to do with them. After all, it's not the Smart Tag itself but what the Smart Tag does that really matters. For example:

  • When copying between Microsoft Office Word documents, you can use a Smart Tag to match the new text to the existing document formatting in one click.

  • When Microsoft Office PowerPoint automatically capitalizes something you didn't intend to be capitalized, you can use a Smart Tag to undo the action and change future autocorrect behavior.

  • When pasting formulas in Microsoft Office Excel, you can use a Smart Tag to select Paste Special options on the flylike Values Only and Link Cellsthereby saving you trips to the Edit menu.

Again, it's what the Smart Tag does that makes a difference in your work. And it's that difference that determines whether or not you use, and eventually fall in love with, Smart Tags.

Now, before you close this book and place it back on the shelf, let us assure youthis is not a book about Smart Tags (though we will touch on them). Rather, this book grew out of our experience arming end users like you with an understanding of the full capabilities of the Microsoft Office system, along with tips and tricks to help you apply new and existing features to your daily work.

It's not enough to simply say "Office has Smart Tags" or whatever the other flavor-of-the-month feature happens to be, and then leave you to your own devices to figure out why, where, and how a feature should be used. In this book, we explain why a particular feature exists, where it can help you, and how you can take advantage of it. Our hope is that the tips and tricks contained herein become indispensable allies in your daily battle for better results.
