| Have you ever had to make a major decision or reach an important goal and wished you had an expert to assess your chances of success? What the Odds Are is about major decisions, goals and fears, too - founded and unfounded.
It is also about expert opinion. that is, how the most authoritative sources assess the chances. When sources are cited, they refer to the data used in our analysis and not our commentary. These sources are identified at the end of the alphabetical entries. In instances in which data was culled from more than three sources, the credit for the information is identified as "compiled research by editors," however, the sources are usually credited in the commentary.
To understand What the Odds Are, it helps to know what we mean by odds, and the various ways they are presented in this book.
Odds can be expressed many ways. Statisticians prefer traditional number-to-number expressions (Le., 2 to 1). Most general reportage in the media use percentages to express the chances that something might happen. |
