This book provides a comprehensive description of the Raman amplification technique as it is applied to telecommunication systems. It covers both the fundamental and the applied aspects and is intended to serve both as a useful reference for researchers engaged in the field and as a teaching manual for those who are planning to enter this exciting field. It may also be used as a teaching tool for graduate students with some knowledge of electromagnetic theory.We strove to avoid having a book with a large number of short chapters because we feel that such a book, although it would contain a collection of invited research papers from the experts, would not serve the objectives that we had in mind. For this reason, we wanted each chapter to be 40 to 50 pages long so that it would cover a specific aspect of Raman-amplification technology in detail. We also asked the contributors to minimize cross-referencing so that each chapter can be read by itself. The book contains seven chapters written by scientists who are experts in their own subfield. It is our hope that the reader will find this book a useful addition to the field of lightwave technology.
