Project management is a rapidly growing focus discipline
within most businesses and organizations, binding the opti-
mal way of operating and managing projects is a continuous
challenge. It might involve fine-tuning work methods, clarifying
roles and simplifying project reporting, or visualizing progress
through the utilization of user-friendly project tools.
Project management of today concerns the entire organization,
whether it is a private enterprise or a public authority. Almost
everyone in their professional careers come across projects one
way or the other. This goes for the individual employee, who
might be involved in one or more projects, all the way up to the
senior management where it is decided which projects to run
and how to distribute resources.
However, the knowledge on project management and what it
really comprises is poorly disseminated and often miscompre-
hended. It is a working method many feel they command.
Unfortunately, I often meet frustrated project managers who
are neither getting the support they need nor the resources to
succeed with their projects. One could liken this to sending your
children off to the store without a shopping list or money. I am
constantly astonished by the top management's belief in mira-
cles.
In this book, I have tried to gather all knowledge I believe you
need to have to be able to manage and execute projects, regard-
less of the role held in the process. One learns from one's mis-
takes, it is said, but let us agree that it would be nice to avoid
some of them by learning from others instead. Competence is
developed by alternating between theoretic learning and prac-
tical application of skills and knowledge. |
