The idea for this guidebook arose from a sojourn of several years in Greece.
During this period it became clear from visits to many sites that, in spite of
the large number of tourist guides dealing with Greece (especially with Athens,
Attica and the Megarid), there was no guide which really filled the need for
reliable academic information, and which gave accurate information on routes
and detailed descriptions of less well-known sites. The present book attempts
to fill this gap.
While working on this guidebook I was able to make use of the library and
photographic archive of the German Archaeological Institute in Athens. The
guidebook has greatly profited from this and from lively discussions with
colleagues in the Institute and with O. Palagia who read the manuscript and
the proofs and proposed many corrections – an inestimable help. I thank P.A.
Mountjoy for some information on the prehistoric sites; she translated the
German manuscript.
I could not have written this guidebook without the unfailing support and
active help of my wife in the many stages of its preparation. I dedicate it to
her as a souvenir of our excursions over the years. |
