This comprehensive book gets you up to speed quickly and goes beyond the fundamentals to help you extend your Windows development skills. You get best practices, technical guidance, and extensive code samples to help you master the intricacies of the next generation driver model-and simplify driver development.

Discover how to:

  • Use the Windows Driver Foundation to develop kernel-mode or user-mode drivers
  • Create drivers that support Plug and Play and power management-with minimal code
  • Implement robust I.O handling code
  • Effectively manage synchronization and concurrency in driver code
  • Develop user-mode drivers for protocol-based and serial-bus-based devices
  • Use USB-specific features of the frameworks to quickly develop drivers for USB devices
  • Design and implement kernel-mode drivers for DMA devices
  • Evaluate your drivers with source code analysis and static verification tools
  • Apply best practices to test, debug, and install drivers

About the Authors

Penny Orwick is an independent writer working with Steyer Associates, specializing in driver development and Windows operating system topics. She began writing about Windows drivers in 1997 and has worked with the Windows Driver Foundation team from the outset of the project to develop technical papers about WDF for the driver development community. Penny has a B.A. from Cornell University and an M.F.A. from the University of Montana.

Guy Smith started programming in Fortran IV on punch cards as a Geophysics graduate student. He began writing SDK documentation for Microsoft early in 1996 and has since worked on many Microsoft technologies including Windows CE, the Windows Shell and Common Controls, DirectX 8, Internet Explorer, and the Windows Presentation Foundation. Quantum Computing for Computer Architects (Synthesis Lectures on Computer Architecture)
Quantum computationmay seem to be a topic for science fiction, but small quantum computers have existed for several years and larger machines are on the drawing table. These efforts have been fueled by a tantalizing property: while conventional computers employ a binary representation that allows computational power to scale linearly with resources...
